What to do When Lost
From:衡阳新闻网 | Date Add in:2017-11-25 17:53:41 [A  A]

The basic method to find directions when you are lost is that sun rises from the east and sets into the west. You also can adopt the stick-and-shadow method. You can raise a stick (longer than 1 meter), and place a stone on the top of the shadow of the stick(or other signs). The shadow of the stick would move as the movement of the sun. 30 to 60 minutes later, you are supposed to place another stone on the top of the shadow of the stick and draw a straight line between these two stones. Then you should draw another line which is intersected with the former line vertically and you can put your left foot on the first stone and the right on the second one. At this time, you would face the north and the back against the south, east on your right side and the west on your left.

Second method to find direction: when you don’t have a compass you can find the direction with your watch under the sun. You can put a match on the ground vertically, and put the watch on the ground flat. Then please make sure that the shadow of the match overlap with the short hand of the watch. The direction between the twelfth and the short hand is south and the other side is north. If you do not have match with you, a stick can also be a good choice. If you are participating in an extending training, please remember to wear a watch, especially an ordinary watch which would be more useful than the digital watch because the hands in the watch would be a good tool to survive.

If you lost direction on a cloudy or rainy day, you can find direction through the living condition of the moss on trees and stones. In the north hemisphere, the flourish side of the tree is facing south. Or, you can cut the tree, and the lose side of the growth ring is facing south.

The last method is to find direction through stars. If you are in the north hemisphere, the Polaris is the target. The key of finding direction at night is to correctly find Polaris among the stars. There are many methods to find Polaris, and a simple one is going to be introduced. Firstly, you are supposed to find the Triones which is shaped like a spoon and follow the direction of the kettle holder and you will find the Polaris which is five times length of the length between the last two stars on the kettle holder away from the spoon.
